| CAPOEIRA MOVIMENTO |
History CAPOEIRA is a martial art of Afro-Brazilian origin. It is distinguished by its incorporation of acrobatic and dance movements as well as integration of music into practice. A Capoeira match or "jogo" takes place within a circle of players called a "Roda". As members of the roda sing and play instruments, two players, called "capoeiristas", enter and begin to spar, in the Jogo, typically, there is as much emphasis on the style and expressiveness of the players as on their martial prowess. The majority of strikes involve the feet and blows are evaded rather than blocked. The result is flowing, rhythmic and dynamic. Ritual Entering the Roda To begin a game, two players move to the "pe do berimbau". This is done entering at the outside edge of the musicans and walking in a crouch. Do not enter from another location or strut upright in front of the mestre; this is disrespectful. When the players are in position, the mestre will signal them to begin with a movement of his head, foot or the berimbau itself. Look your opponent in the eyes, touch de floor and shake hands. Some capoeiristas take this moment to perform some kind of personal ritual: making the sign of the cross, drawing symbols on the floor, etc. Enter the roda with style, but caution - the game has begun the moment your hands touch. Buying The Game In a regional game, the most common way to alternate players is one to buy the game or comprar o jogo. While squatting at the pe do berimbau, the mestre will signal you to enter the roda. Approach the two players in such a manner as to make obvious your presence. Do NOT come behind one player and tap him on the shoulder-this is asking for an elbow in the mouth. Rather, enter from a spot between the two, facing the indiviual with whom you wish to play (usually the one who`s been in the roda the least amount of time), but keeping your eye on the other as well. Once the other player has left the area, you may begin to play. Never buy the of a mestre. He has the right to play all day if he wishes. Master Carlos |
